As a former teacher, I can relate to the woes of the teachers in Alabama and throughout the country. The teachers in Alabama didn't receive any raise last year or this year but may face a pay cut if they'll be required to pay more for retirement and health insurance. With the rate things are going education employees who will be hired after July 1, 2010 will have to work 30 years instead of 25 years before they can retire.
The 2005 MetLife Survey of The American Teacher studied teachers who said they were likely to leave the teaching profession within the next five years. According to the report, 12 significant factors can predict that a teacher is likely to leave the profession. Four of the 12 factors reference pay, resources, or funding issues
I believe that the plights of our educators especially when it comes to their salaries and benefits should be given special consideration by our government if we want quality education in America. Teachers make the greatest single difference in academic achievement, regardless of their students’ economic or ethnic backgrounds.
