Older people should adhere to the advice of the experts: don't cross the street while on the phone because you have a high chance of getting hit by a car compared to younger adults. Older here means 60 and above and it could be worse if you have a history of falling. Your safest bet is to listen to some music on your iPod (if you have one) since "it's a more passive activity" according to researchers.
I'm a responsible cell phone user. I don't use it when I'm walking or driving which I believe is a very reckless thing to do. I agree with researchers that it's hard to concentrate on a task at hand when you're chatting on the phone. My only advice to those who use their iPod while walking is to make sure that the volume is just enough so you know or hear what's going on around you.
