CNN Heroes - the best show I've watched in a long time

I was teary-eyed while watching CNN Heroes on Thanksgiving night. The things that all of the nominees did were amazing. It's just right that they're recognized for all the selfless efforts they did to their communities. I'm proud of all of them and I would like to especially mention my fellow countryman Efren Penaflorida from the Philippines. I'm so proud of his dedication to bring education within reach of impoverished children. I hope that all the politicians in the Philippines will look up to him as an inspiration in serving the Filipino people instead of engaging themselves in corruption.

Efren received $100,000 which he will use to further his advocacy. He started his group Dynamic Teen Company in 1997 and since then the group has helped 1,700 children and nearly 12,000 members in his organization.

Here are the 2009 Top 10 CNN Heroes:

Brad Blauser
Brad Blauser is providing hope and mobility to disabled children and their families in Iraq. Since 2005, his Wheelchairs for Iraqi Kids program has distributed nearly 650 free pediatric wheelchairs to children in need.

Roy Foster
Army veteran Roy Foster started Stand Down House to help veterans struggling with addiction and homelessness in Florida. Since 2000, his program has provided life-changing services to nearly 900 veterans.

Doc Hendley
Bartender Doc Hendley is providing clean water to communities worldwide. Through creative fundraising, his nonprofit Wine to Water has brought sustainable water systems to 25,000 people in five countries.

Andrea Ivory
Breast cancer survivor Andrea Ivory is bringing early detection to the doorsteps of uninsured women. With mobile mammography vans, her group has provided more than 500 free screenings in Miami, Florida.

Betty Makoni
Zimbabwe native Betty Makoni founded the Girl Child Network to provide a haven for young victims of sexual abuse. The organization has rescued more than 35,000 girls since 2001.

Jorge Munoz
School bus driver Jorge Munoz is helping hungry New Yorkers make it through tough times. Since 2004, he has handed out more than 70,000 meals from his mobile soup kitchen in Queens -- for free.

Efren PeƱaflorida
Efren PeƱaflorida gives Filipino youth an alternative to gang membership through education. His Dynamic Teen Company's 10,000 members have taught basic reading and writing to 1,500 kids living in the slums.

Budi Soehardi
Budi Soehardi founded a children's home in one of the poorest areas of Indonesia. Today, Roslin Orphanage in West Timor provides food, shelter and education to more than 45 children.

Derrick Tabb
Derrick Tabb started The Roots of Music to give young people an alternative to New Orleans' streets. His music education program provides free tutoring, instruments and music instruction to more than 100 students.

Jordan Thomas
Jordan Thomas, 20, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, lost both of his legs in a boating accident in 2005. Since then, his Jordan Thomas Foundation has raised more than $400,000 to provide prosthetics for children in need.

A fastfood with a lousy merchant service

I don't know who's the merchant service provider of this famous fastfood chain in my town. But if I were the owner, I'd definitely start looking for a new provider that can extend dependable merchant services. When we went there the other day to grab a quick lunch they told us that they couldn't accept credit cards because something went wrong with their machine. It wasn't the first time it happened. Of course since we're all hungry at the time I had no choice but to get cash from a nearby ATM machine. And I had to pay a fee because it wasn't my bank.

I won't be surprised if this fastfood place will lose some (if not all) of its customers because of their lousy service. Not a lot of people carry cash nowadays and it can be a big inconvenience for them if they wouldn't be able to pay with their credit or debit cards.

Kaanapali Beach Hotel puts hospitality into practice

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of BeyondROI. All opinions are 100% mine.

Hawaii is one of my dream destinations. I've seen pictures of my friend when she attended a couple of Maui Weddings and I was amazed at how beautiful the place was where the weddings were held. The name of the place is called Kaanapali Beach Hotel, a famous Maui Resort . What a coincidence that both weddings were held at the same place and she didn't have to move from one place to another.

My friend has convinced me to stay at Kaanapali Hotel when the right time comes for me to visit Hawaii. I love the idea that most of the hotel's employees are natives of Hawaii who are familiar of the culture, history, the best island attractions, best restaurants, and the local bargains. Aside from its beautiful location which makes it attractive for tourists, KBH also has very affordable rates compared to other hotels in the area.

I've seen pictures of KBH and I can understand why patrons rave about them. It's located on a flawless stretch of world-famous Kaanapali Beach which can be viewed from your room. The Kaanapali Beach area is expensive already so staying at KBH is a wise alternative. I can't wait to visit Hawaii and experience hospitality the KBH way.

Cell phone more dangerous than iPod

Older people should adhere to the advice of the experts: don't cross the street while on the phone because you have a high chance of getting hit by a car compared to younger adults. Older here means 60 and above and it could be worse if you have a history of falling. Your safest bet is to listen to some music on your iPod (if you have one) since "it's a more passive activity" according to researchers.

I'm a responsible cell phone user. I don't use it when I'm walking or driving which I believe is a very reckless thing to do. I agree with researchers that it's hard to concentrate on a task at hand when you're chatting on the phone. My only advice to those who use their iPod while walking is to make sure that the volume is just enough so you know or hear what's going on around you.

How to make your car alarm effective

I've learned today that in order for a car alarm to be effective the control unit must be invisible and undetectable, the siren must be hidden and inaccessible, all wiring should be concealed in split loom, the alarm should have it's own backup battery, and the alarm must be able to detect all types of intrusion. It was a very wise decision for my DH to hire a professional because there's no way he could have done the alarm to work by himself. The split loom wiring accessory is a corrugated tube that is extruded in black polypropylene. It is used for routing and protecting wire bundles and single cables from abrasion. They are available in six diameters.

I'm learning new things everyday. I didn't have any idea what a split loom was until we needed to have our car alarm checked.

I'm getting better with my driving

I've been learning how to drive but I slack sometimes. My husband encourages me incessantly to drive when I can to overcome my fear of driving. These past weeks I've been driving to work with my husband of course in the passenger's seat. My hands used to sweat whenever I'm behind the wheels but this time I've noticed that I'm more calm and more confident with my driving.

I'm proud of myself that I have overcome my greatest fear. I don't shake anymore when I'm driving next to an 18-wheeler. Now I look forward to driving everyday to work. I know I still have a lot to learn and overcoming my fear was the first major step. Pretty soon I'll be looking into auto accessories when I get my own car.

Pencils are popular giveaways

I can't count how many pencils my son has. Most of his pencils are from his teachers which they give to their students as giveaways or rewards. Some of his teachers really go out of their way and buy these pencils and some are even personalized. I'd rather have teachers give pencils to their students because these items are eco-friendly since they're made of wood.

My son's teacher told me that she buys promotional pencils online and she saves money that way because she buys them in bulk. I appreciate teachers who always take an extra mile or two to make their classroom activities fun and rewarding even if it means they have to spend from their own pockets. This is why I don't mind helping my son's teachers in any way I can because I know and see how dedicated they are in their profession.

Kinds of diet pills

There are three kind of diet pills. The first diet pill is the kind that raises your metabolism, this is a kind of upper and will have an effect more like caffeine then anything. The next kind of diet pill is designed to stop you from getting hungry, this is an appetite suppressant. The third kind of diet pill is a much different, this kind of pill stops your body from metabolizing either fats or carbohydrates to try and make you not get penalized for what you eat.

Before taking any diet pill you should first verify if it's counterfeit or not. The Internet nowadays is flooded with diet pills so always be careful and do your research. When you read testimonials about a certain diet pill always be on the lookout for claims that sound too good to be true. Don't also fall as prey to companies that say they provide a full refund because they're good in explaining why you're not eligible for one.

Cervical cancer screening to begin at 21 and less often

According to the American Cancer Society cervical cancer has affected 11,270 US women in 2009. This is still a big number considering that over the last 30 years, "cervical cancer screening has decreased the cervical cancer incidence rate by half", according to the the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

Just like any screening tests there are pros and cons and it's believed that there are known harms associated with screening women younger than 21 and experts say that cervical cancer is extremely rare among adolescents.

According to Dr. Debbie Saslow of the American Cancer Society most women who die from cervical cancer have never been screened, or have not been screened in at least 5 years. Experts recommend that women should be informed about the potential benefits, harms, and limitations of cervical cancer screening.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) and ACOG both agree that:
  • women 30 and older should be screened for cervical cancer once every 2 years, instead of annually as was previously recommended
  • women 30 and older who have had 3 consecutive negative tests be screened once every 3 years
  • certain women, including those with HIV or a weakened immune system, get screened every year. The same goes for women who have had previous cervical abnormalities, and women exposed to the chemical DES.
  • women around age 65 to 70 should stop screening, as long as a woman has had 3 negative tests in the last 10 years. Women who have had a hysterectomy for benign reasons do not need to be screened.

Outer Banks is on my list

Have you been to the Outer Banks? If not, don't feel bad because you're not alone. I haven't been there myself either but I'd love to go if time and money will allow me to. People rave over the wide sandy beaches and refreshing waters in the Outer Banks, one of North Carolina's most visited coastal communities.

The Outer Banks is considered a mecca for those who love beach activities like kiteboarding, windsurfing and hang gliding. And some lazy afternoons can be spend shopping or checking out restaurants. Of course, to add spice to your vacation the Outer Banks has clubs for your entertainment.

A friend of mine who has been to the Outer Banks suggested that I rent a place should my family want to visit the Outer Banks. Out of curiosity I searched online for outer banks vacation rentals and I learned that these rental places go out fast so I guess I have to know soon if we're heading to North Carolina next summer.

Who will replace Oprah's time slot?

I watched the Friday episode of Oprah when she announced that her show will close in 2011. The big question now is who's going to replace her time slot. Oprah has a huge following and it will be the biggest challenge for whoever will take her slot to top it or at least close to it.

There are other daytime shows but none of them can equal Oprah's pull. Some shows didn't even last long. Oprah seems to be the only one who has the recipe for success. She has always been genuine and truthful and extremely generous.

Oprah's show has lost 50% of its viewers from 1991-2009 but her recent episodes such as her interview with Whitney Houston and Sarah Palin attracted 7.2 million viewers a day.

Oprah will launch her own network on January 2011 called OWN or The Oprah Winfrey Network which will replace The Discovery Health Channel. Meanwhile, Oprah promised her televiewers on Friday that her coming episodes will "knock our socks off" during the final two years of the most successful daytime talk show in television history.

All i want for Christmas is a new vacuum cleaner

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Dirt Devil. All opinions are 100% mine.

Yes, that’s true. I don’t want jewelries, handbags, or shoes. I already told my DH that I just want a reliable vacuum cleaner. Right now I’m using a vacuum cleaner that spits pebbles and I have no clue how the pebbles got inside the vacuum. It’s really an inconvenience because after I vacuum I have to use the broom to make sure there are no pebbles on the carpet and on the wooden floor.
2009dirtdevilguide_250x250

We checked out dirtdevil.com as most of my friends have recommended this brand to me. We first went through the Dirt Devil Holiday Buying Guide and we have decided on buying the Accucharge 15.6 Volt Cordless Stick Vac for only $59.99 with free shipping.

One of the things that I like about Accucharge is it’s Energy Star compliant which means I can conserve on energy. I only have to charge it for 6 hours and “once the battery is charged, power is reduced to a trickle to maintain the battery without drawing extra power. This remarkable system reduces energy consumption by 70% and extends the life of the battery”.

I can’t wait for my DH to order this vacuum cleaner. It will make my life so much easier without having to sweep the floor to make sure it’s clean.

3 new ancient crocodile species fossils found

I'm looking forward to the National Geographic Channel show tomorrow about the 3 newly discovered species of crocodiles. These species were believed to have roamed the earth millions of years ago in Northern Africa during the dinosaur era. These crocodile-type reptiles have amphibious talents meaning they can roam the land and they can swim too. We heard of stories about crocodiles attacking humans but during the dinosaur era there were no signs of people around so these species thrived on plants and animals for food.

The newly discovered species are:
• Kaprosuchus saharicus, nicknamed "BoarCroc," found in Niger. BoarCroc was a 20-foot-long meat-eater with an armored snout for ramming and three sets of dagger-shaped fangs for slicing. The tusks stuck out above and below the jaw like a modern warthog, said Larsson. "This has never been seen before on any crocodile."
• Araripesuchus rattoides, which the researchers call "RatCroc," found in Morocco. This 3-foot-long croc was a plant- and grub-eater with a pair of buckteeth in the lower jaw it used to dig for food.
• Laganosuchus thaumastos, or "PancakeCroc," found in Niger and Morocco. Also 20 feet long, it was a squat fish-eater with a 3-foot pancake-flat head and spike-shaped teeth on slender jaws. Sereno said it probably remained motionless for hours, its jaws open and waiting for prey.

Maine's beautiful autumn colors

The leaves are gone now but I will always remember the beauty of Maine especially in the fall. The trees were ablazed with shades of yellow, orange, and sometimes red. While enjoying its beauty, I was overwhelmed with awe over God's amazing creativity.

New England is famous for its fall foliage. People from all over the country make a trip here just to see the beautiful display of colors during the autumn season. I don't blame them. Traveling is not always a pleasant experience especially when you're driving hundreds of miles but once you see the trees lining up the streets in different colors or the mountain afar covered with different shades of colors then everything becomes worthwhile.

(Both pictures were taken at Baxter State Park, Maine)

Make it personal

A lot of people choose to send personalised christmas cards to their family and friends. Aside from being unique and creative, it's also economical. There are many cards for purchase on the market but they're all marked up especially if you buy them individually. Buying by bulk can save you money but they lack the warmth that comes from the heart and they don't get across the message you'd like to convey on your card.

For your personalised Christmas cards you can use a family portrait, a picture of your favorite pet or a picture of your favorite place during your most recent vacation. You'll not only enjoy it but your family as well.

Solar power plan may help India's power shortage

India, Asia's third largest economy, is facing a severe shortage of electricity. India needs to upgrade its electrical power plants if they want to catch up with the advanced economies of the world and to encourage more local and foreign investors. Businesses have expressed frustration over the unreliability of India's power supply.

Summer in India is not something to look forward to due to its longer power outages. It can get very uncomfortable especially with record-breaking temperatures. As of 2008, India has 78 million households who do not have access to electricity.

Last week it was reported that India will soon launch its solar power generation from 3MW to 20,000 MW by 2022. India manufactures solar panels but they can't use them because of its high price and Indian officials will address this issue and more.

Best injury lawyers in Tampa, FL

Truck drivers are more prone to highway accidents than any other drivers. Truck drivers work regardless of the weather which can cause serious problem such as rollovers. If you've been in an injury it's important to consult an injury lawyer immediately. If you can't do it yourself a friend or family member can do it for you. The longer you wait to consult a lawyer the harder it is to prove a personal injury. Remember that a personal injury lawyer has to collect crucial evidence of the accident. If you're in Tampa, you need to contact ligorilaw.com for a tampa injury lawyer. Nobody wants to be in an accident but if you get involved in one then always consult a lawyer for your best interest.

Signs at Baxter State Park

It was raining and cold when we went to BSP but it didn't stop me from taking pictures. I found some signs that I'd like to share here. You can actually start exploring the Appalachian Trail from BSP. I also learned that you can do fly fishing at BSP at designated areas only. My husband and I were debating as to what happened to the person whom the sign was referring to as 'the unknown river driver'.

Funny t-shirts: not a bad idea

I love funny t shirts. I specifically like the ones that are witty and funny at the same time. Not that I want attention but I think it's nice to make people laugh or smile at random. I'm not good in telling jokes so I figured I'd just wear a funny t-shirt. I believe I have a good sense of humor so you can trust me that I don't wear a shirt with an offensive print or design on it.

Another thing, aside from the joke printed on my shirt I'm also choosy when it comes to the color. I love purple, brown, and black so it's important that the joke and the color go together.

Stump Pond (Baxter State Park, Maine)

When we were at the Baxter State Park last month we stopped by at Stump Pond. We're hoping to see some critters but nothing showed up. People said that they've seen moose here. It was chilly that morning so we couldn't really stay and wait longer. According to the park ranger, cubs also showed up in this area but they were moved to a different location because they became dependent on people for food. It's very important not to feed wild animals so they don't become dependent on humans for food and survival.

Nevertheless, it was a beautiful scenery. There was another group of visitors in the area and I was glad that we're not alone. I always have this fear that wild animals no matter how adorable or friendly they look could always snap without notice.

Failed banks rose to 119

Don't feel bad if you're short on funds because some banks have insufficient funds too. Because of the crippled economy and increasing loan defaults some banks were forced to close. As of September 2009, the number of banks that have failed reached 89. As of November 6, 2009 the number of failed banks rose to 119. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation has a list of failed banks and their contact information.

Secure your family's future

Just last week I've mentioned to my DH that I want to purchase a life insurance. Well at that time he was at work so he told me that we'd discuss it more detail when he gets home. Finally we're able to sit together and searched the web for companies that offer life insurance.

Since I'm in good health and still in my early 30's my premium every month is something that is not heavy on my wallet. A company offers life insurance – so what's my next step? Of course I called a customer service representative at the Advantage Term Life and they've been very helpful. The representative explained to me what are my options, their policies and rates.

So if you've been thinking about getting a life insurance, term, or whole, call Advantage Term Life now at 866-923-0806 for a free quote.

Alabama teachers face tough choices

As a former teacher, I can relate to the woes of the teachers in Alabama and throughout the country. The teachers in Alabama didn't receive any raise last year or this year but may face a pay cut if they'll be required to pay more for retirement and health insurance. With the rate things are going education employees who will be hired after July 1, 2010 will have to work 30 years instead of 25 years before they can retire.

The 2005 MetLife Survey of The American Teacher studied teachers who said they were likely to leave the teaching profession within the next five years. According to the report, 12 significant factors can predict that a teacher is likely to leave the profession. Four of the 12 factors reference pay, resources, or funding issues

I believe that the plights of our educators especially when it comes to their salaries and benefits should be given special consideration by our government if we want quality education in America. Teachers make the greatest single difference in academic achievement, regardless of their students’ economic or ethnic backgrounds.

Researchers: menstrual blood abundant source of stem cells

Researchers and experts are always looking for a cure to end breast cancer. Cyro-Cell International, Inc. is partnering with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to explore the potential utilization of menstrual stem cells to treat breast cancer.

Researchers seeking new and more abundant sources of stem cells for use in regenerative medicine have identified a potentially unlimited, noncontroversial, easily collectable, and inexpensive source – menstrual blood. According to an msnbc.com article “these menstrual stem cells could offer several advantages. They come from a source that's easy to obtain from women, they could be used to treat patients without the fear of tissue rejection, and they avoid ethical questions”. Furthermore, experiments in lab dishes showed that under the right conditions, the menstrual stem cells could turn into more different tissue types — including bone, blood vessel, fat, brain, lung, liver, pancreas and heart — than other adult stem cells. The new stem cells also grow readily and rapidly, which is an important advantage because it is difficult to get some types of adult stem cells to give rise to enough cells to be of any medical value.

The C'Elle Breast Cancer Donation is offering contributions to the Susan B. Komen Foundation. For every purchase of the “Protect Baby, Protect Mom” service Cyro-Cell Breast Cancer Donation will donate $50 and for each purchase of the ‘C’elle Menstrual Stem Cell” service $25 will be donated.

A visit to Baxter State Park

My family spent a weekend in Maine last month. We only had two places to visit in our itinerary - Baxter State Park and Acadia National Park. On our first day, we headed to Millinocket where Baxter State Park is located. It was a rainy day but we didn't want to waste any time. We drove throughout the park and it took us almost three hours to reach the gate at the other end of the park. Aside from the muddy road, the speed limit was only 20/mph and sometimes 10/mph. We also made frequent stops to take some pictures. Nevertheless, we found the park beautiful and it will make you feel really close to nature.
The fall foliage was at peak at the time and the park looked like it was on fire with all the bright colors. It was just beautiful. I never get tired of the fall colors even if I see it every year.

Brazilian government on blackout: blame it to bad weather

Of course no one likes to take responsibility, are you kidding me? 60 million people in the dark - others trapped in the elevator, some stranded on commuter trains or stuck in their apartments - blame it to the bad weather. In other parts of Brazil, people didn't only lose power, they also lost water service. Brazil is the world's second-largest power producer next to China.

According to Brazil's energy minister, the weather made transformers on a high-voltage transmission line short circuit. As a safety precaution, it also automatically shuts off other transmission lines. With the World Cup and the Olympics coming up the blackout situation surely doesn't help Brazil's image. I agree with analysts that Brazil needs to invest more in their power system.

The Brazilian energy minister said that what happened wasn't that bad - it was only for a few hours. It took US and Canada a day to restore power in 2003 and Italy and Japan even had longer blackouts. Maybe Brazil should ponder what experts say that the blackout on Tuesday was just the beginning of failures in their power system.

Perfect Christmas gifts

I’m a photography enthusiast. I love taking pictures of just about anything that I find interesting. I have a DSLR camera and I’m loving it. It’s actually easy for my family and friends to find a Christmas or birthday gift for me because they know what I love doing.

Although I own a different brand of camera, I’d still like to have a Nikon DSLR. Of course I’d like to also have a nice camera bag. I found an online store which carry nikon camera bags and I like them because their prices are very affordable.

I’m just so glad that I’m using a DSLR now, it’s so much different from a point and shoot camera as far as the quality of photos is concerned. It can sometimes be overwhelming to use with lots of buttons to choose from but once you get used to it then it becomes fun to use. I still have my old camera but I haven’t used if for a while now. I’m thinking of giving it to my sister.

Photography is a lot of fun. It can be challenging at times but you just get better as you go along. I haven’t posted some of the pictures that I took during our trip to Acadia National Park but I’ll do it once I get the chance.

Do you believe in aliens?

If you ask me the same question - my answer is NO simply because I haven't seen one. Seeing is believing is my mantra. Yes I've seen the movie ET and it was fun and sure the alien looked adorable in the movie but it's not enough to convince me that there's life out there. It doesn't mean that humans inhabit the earth that there are others not like us who inhabit the outer space.

I'm glad that the Vatican hired experts (others non-Catholics) to study the possibility of alien life and what it means for the Catholic Church. I understand that this endeavor takes time and needs the help of different experts in the field of astronomy, physics, biology and so much more. Actually, I prefer science and religion rather than politics and religion. What do you think? Most politicians are self-serving anyways.

Most movies about aliens have portrayed them as bad - abducting people left and right. But I was thinking that this is the same with humans too - there are good and bad people. Even humans abduct humans. It will be interesting to know some years from now if we humans are not alone in this world and by then who knows I will change my mind and accept the concept of alien life.

The Vatican Observatory is based in Castel Gandolfo outside Rome. Research is also conducted at an observatory at the University of Arizona, in Tucson.

Fort Hood incident was unfortunate

I'm sure by now we have already heard about what happened in Fort Hood, Texas. But until now I'm still confused how the alleged shooter planned out what he did without being noticed. He was communicating with a radical imam overseas who encouraged Muslims all over the world to kill U.S. troops in Iraq. This should have provided authorities a hint to watch out for the alleged shooter but since the exchanged messages between these two people did not contain any threat of terrorism no further actions were taken by the terrorism task force. By the way, this imam had contact with 2 of the Sept. 11 hijackers. Talking about clues.

The alleged shooter will be tried in a military court. The most serious charge in military court is premeditated murder, which carries the death penalty. It will really be interesting to find out what his lawyers are going to come up. Does the alleged shooter have a mental condition or was everything premeditated? I'll keep my opinion to myself but someone is liable for those lives that were lost and for those who were injured.

Going modern

A Modern Furniture will definitely make a home look beautiful and give it a relaxing ambiance. Sometimes when a house has ancient or outdated furniture it will add to the stress surrounding the house. Most people when they get home from work they would love to relax on the couch right away. But can you imagine if you have an old and squeaky couch? It wouldn't make you feel good I bet.

If you have a modern house of course you need modern furniture to achieve the balance look. Most people need chairs, tables, sofas, beds, cabinets and many more. Since there are many to choose from you should know what looks best in your house and most importantly what makes you feel comfortable. It doesn't hurt to also ask an expert's advice. If you are after quality then you should check out spacify.com.

Espionage charges for 3 US hikers

On July 31 three US hikers were detained by the Iranian government on charges of illegally crossing the border from Iraqi Kurdistan to Iran. Today, a Palestinian prosecutor said that the hikers will be charged with espionage. The White House said that these hikers are innocent and should be released by the Iranian government.

The hikers have very little contact with their families. We all know that Iran is not our friend so any communication to the Iranian government is through Switzerland. A Swiss diplomat visited the hikers in Tehran on September 29 and October 29 for 40 minutes.

I hope that this situation will serve as a lesson to everyone who sets foot on a foreign land. I think that we should all be aware of the consequences when crossing borders. I hope that these hikers will be released soon to their families. I believe that they made an innocent mistake and should be absolved by humanitarian considerations.

Why give out promotional products

Statistics have shown that promotional products have the potential to yield great results. All promotional products serve the same purpose: to generate name recognition and customer goodwill. Companies can give away products that are practical and creative, in demand and relative to their target audience. Depending on what kind of business you have, you can give out calculators, tire-pressure gauges imprinted with your logo and phone number, mousepads with a logo and URL, or seasonal items like fleece vests and beach towels.

If you own a business and you're having a difficult time looking for the perfect promotional product you can check out the Internet and there's a lot of companies that can help you select the right kind of product for your loyal customers and target audience.

What causes market volatility?

Nowadays talks about health care and unemployment contribute to the market's volatility. These concerns have caused people confusion and uncertainty. The market has been going down in the past weeks it feels like the financial crisis has started all over again. Is it time to take the profits and get out of the market? Personally, I prefer to stay since I'm still in the buying stage although I'm scared to lose my hard earned money. But as what they say the market is not for the faint of hearts. I really think it all boils down to what stocks are you investing in or your overall position. Financial experts always remind investors or would-be investors to do a careful research before investing.

This week I'm hoping that the market will perform fairly well. I'm not expecting huge gains but I hope to recover some of my losses in the past week. Starbucks (SBUX) was my biggest gainer last week while Baker Hughes Inc (BHI) was my biggest loser.

Easy language translation

It would be nice if we know more than one language. I know some people are multi-lingual but most of us are not. Some jobs today require that applicants know how to speak English and Spanish or English and German and so on. In other words, learning a different language other than your own is a big plus.

Some companies would need some documents translated to other languages. Although there are many language translation services out there, it's important to choose the one that's not only reliable but affordable as well. Some companies would need brand translation to avoid confusion. One example is the search engine Bing which is called Biying in South China which represents a different meaning to people in China.

If you need more information visit translia.com now.

I'm worried about my mother

My mother lives in Pakistan with her husband and son. In recent weeks we have been bombarded with news about the hostilities in Pakistan between its government and the militants. Just a few minutes ago it's reported that the town mayor of Adazai, Abdul Malik, was killed along with other 11 people by a suicide bomber who was believed to be a member of the Taliban. Malik has been hunted by the Taliban for organizing an anti-Taliban militia. He used to be a supporter of the group.

The Pakistani government is determined to stop the South Waziristan operation. In this effort lives have been lost killing more than 300 civilians and soldiers.

I'm hoping that my mother and her family will leave Pakistan soon. About 350,000 people have fled the fighting. I know that she's worried about their business in Lahore but their safety is more important.

Ran out of purple

It was reported that a graffiti artist in Palm Bay, Florida left his/her spray-painted creation incomplete. Palm Bay police officer Dan Fisher says the artist left a painted note "ran out of purple" next to the word "Solo". Fisher said that the artist's act is a criminal mischief charge and is likely to face it if he or she is apprehended. The damage was estimated at about $200.

Although the graffiti artist was apologetic, he/she has a lot of explaining to do in court. If you are convicted of criminal mischief in Florida you could be facing a significant jail time. Criminal mischief may have been commited if you willfully and maliciously damaged someone else's property which includes graffiti and vandalism. The penalty you face for criminal mischief depends on the value of the damage done.

A sexy witch

Have you seen a sexy witch? Well you have to check out great-sexy-costumes.com for halloween sexy costumes. Witch is the #1 costume according to the National Retail Federation survey of the top ten costumes for grownups. Halloween may be over now but it doesn't mean you can't wear your Halloween costumes in some parties especially those that have themes. Halloween is not the only time to pretend to be someone else.

Halloween costumes can get to be pretty expensive especially the adult ones. If you'll go to some Halloween stores and check on the tabs, it's enough to make you gasp for air. To make the most out of what you've paid you can always reuse them for other occasions like birthday parties that requires dressing up in different costumes. A little accessorizing will give your old custome a makeover. Rather than throwing your costume in a dumpster you can always re-invent them for a new look and feel. You're not only saving yourself some money but you're also being eco-friendly.

I'm actually amazed by how people here in the U.S. go crazy for Halloween costumes. This year American consumers are expected to spend $4.75 billion from candies, to costumes and decorations. People still want to have fun even with the present economy.

Who will host the 2018 Winter Olympics?

The host for the 2016 Summer Olympics is Rio de Janeiro. The 2012 Summer Olympic games will be held in London from July 27 to August 12. And the quest for the 2018 Winter Olympics host is on. Munich is one of the interested parties and former Olympic skier Willy Bogner has been named as its head. Bogner is a former two-time Olympian skier and later became involved in making and directing movies. He was a longtime member of Germany's National Olympic Committee. Bogner, 67, owns a sports apparel company that carries fashion lines in tennis, golf, and sunglasses.

The deadline for the submission of the applications for interested parties was on October 15, 2009. The application fee was USD$150,000. The final election will be held on July 6, 2011 in Durban, South Africa.

South Korea and France are expected to bid. China will not submit a bid to host the Winter Olympics in 2018.

Sleep apnea can be treated

About 30 million to 40 million Americans suffer with sleep apnea. People who are overweight are likely to complain of sleep apnea. Overweight people tend to have overweight insides such as large tonsils or adenoids. Large tonsils can block the airways and constrict breathing. According to health experts weight loss is important to combat snoring which can hurt a person's sleep quality.

Apnea can be fatal. If not treated it can also cause daytime fatigue, memory loss, depression, anxiety, irritability, erectile dysfunction, hypertension, diabetes, seizures and strokes. To avoid sleep apnea a person should exercise regularly and avoid sleeping pills, alcohol and heavy meals or snacks at least three hours before sleep.

There are so many devices available to cure snoring from sprays, breathe right strips, herbal medicine, pillows and many more. People suffering from sleep apnea can also use a CPAP equipment which is attached to the nose and positive pressure to nasal airways is applied so the airway ventilates correctly. This sleep apnea mask if used as directed can give sleep apnea sufferers with the sleep they need so they will feel refreshed and energized every day. A CPAP user is always encouraged to get the right fit, size, and style of their mask for comfortability and proper seal for the airflow.

"World of Warcraft" is a huge moneymaker

The video game industry took the hit due to the poor economy. But thanks to "Guitar Hero 5" and "World of Warcraft" Activision Blizzard, Inc. reported a profit for its 3Q. In time for the holiday, a game called "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" will be released next week. But the question now is whether or not the Americans are ready to dig deeper into their pockets. I think most businesses are nervous about consumer behavior especially with the gloomy economy.

Aside from "Modern Warfare 2" other video games like "Band Hero" and "Tony Hawk" will be released in time for the holiday shopping. "World of Warcraft" still dominates as Activision's biggest revenue source because of its huge following.

Right now my son has expressed no interest in any video games which makes me happy. All his game systems are kept in one place and I haven't seen him use them for a while now. I'm still being conservative in my spending habits and probably even after the economy will turn around.

There are so many selections of memphis shades at cruisercustomizing.com. My eyes went wide as I went from one shade to another. They're all very attractive and even the prices too. Beware of incompetent prosecutors

I always feel bad everytime I hear cases of people who served time in jail for the crimes they did not commit. Take for example the case of two African American men who after serving 25 years in prison were released by the court. The pair was found innocent for the 1978 murder of a white police officer in Iowa. The court ruled that the prosecutors dictated the key witness what to testify in court.

Twenty five years is a long time. The two men have lost a good amount of time that they could have spent with their loved ones. The two former prisoners are seeking to sue the prosecutors and I think that these prosecutors should face responsibility for the wrong actions and decisions they have made.

Another man named Holly Wood is arguing that his defense lawyer was incompetent. Wood was convicted in Alabama in 1994 for the murder of his ex-girlfriend. At the time of the sentencing, Woods lawyer just graduated and had no experience in death penalty cases. He failed to present evidence that Wood had the mental capacity of a child having an IQ between 59 and 64. Wood is still facing death penalty but the Supreme Court agreed to consider the case.

Now I'm curious what's the IQ of Wood's lawyer.

How to make your life easier this holiday season

If you have a big family and have tons of friends most likely you send lots of holiday cards every year. Sure it's more convenient to send e-greeting cards but nothing compares to doing it the traditional way. But sending out holiday cards is not our only concern during the holiday season. We also think about what gifts to give to whom, what dress to wear for the parties that you're going to attend and the list goes on. It's a relief for busy people that postcards.com will actually do the postcard printing and they can even mail them for you through UPS. The postcards can also be shipped to you.

The prices at postcards.com are very affordable. For example, 100 pieces of 4 x 6 single sided, standard quality postcards is only $12.00. If you have any questions you can call them at 1-888-663-7080. For a limited time they're offering 30% off on holiday greeting cards.

Make a difference to stop climate change

Every little thing we do makes an impact to our environment. Climate change is being tackled globally and although some countries like the U.S. rejected the 1997 Kyoto Protocol there are things we can do at home and outside that will prevent the Earth from getting warmer.

Greenhouse gases are the main culprit for climate changes scientists say. Greenhouse gases have both natural and human sources. Volcanic eruptions are considered natural resources while burning of fossil fuels and industrial processes are considered human sources.

So how can we help in protecting our environment from the greenhouse effect? We can conserve energy by turning off all appliances like TV and computers if they're not in use. We can also save energy by taking the bus, riding a bike, or walking. It's also important that we plant and conserve trees because they absorb carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas. We also need to recycle so we send less trash to the landfill.

Most products now are made to save energy. The less energy we use, the better. More and more households in the U.S. are using solar energy or "energy that comes from the sun". If you buy a car make sure it has a good mileage. Lesser gas, lesser pollution. Of course, carpooling is another energy saver. The lesser car on the roads the better it is for our environment. To help you identify appliances which save energy just look for the ENERGY STAR labels.

Kids make married couple happier

According to a study published in the Oct. 14 online edition of the Journal of Happiness Studies having children boosts happiness. However, this only applies to married couples. According to Dr. Luis Angeles of the University of Glasgow in Scotland, when people get married it's the signal that "they are ready, or at least willing, to enter parenthood". The study found that single, separated and co-habiting people have negative experiences.

This study is a contradiction of the previous research suggesting that having more offspring doesn't lead to greater happiness and might even make people less satisfied with their lives. However, the new study notes that life satisfaction for married people - women espcially - goes up the more kids they have.

I only have one child but he makes me and his dad happy. Although there are times that we wish we can have one more child we are satisfied the way things are. However, I don't doubt that a new addition to our family will make us happier. Children are always bundles of joy.

Jane Doe now has a name

It's amazing to know that after 55 years authorities were finally able to determine what happened to Dorothy Gay Howard. When Howard's younger sister provided her DNA sample to Boulder County Sheriff's Detective Steve Ainsworth, the lead investigator in the case, they're able to find out that Jane Doe, a murdered young woman in Colorado 55 years ago, and Howard's younger sister were related. This finding was able to give light to the case that Jane Doe and Dorothy Gay Howard are one and the same. Historian Silvia Pattem also get credits for encouraging Boulder County sheriff's officials to renew efforts to identify Jane Doe.

Ainsworth believes that it was serial killer Harvey Glatman, who was executed in 1959 in California, who killed Howard. Glatman confessed to killing three women and served time in a Colorado state prison for violent assaults on women, including one about a quarter of a mile from where Howard's body was found.

Justice has finally been served to Howard and her family.

Magnets are nice gift ideas

The holidays are here whether we like them or not. I have mixed feelings when this time of the year comes for two reasons. First - I'm away from my family. It's been five years now that I've celebrated Christmas and New Year away from them. It always gives me a sad feeling. Second - I feel relieved that I have a second family here to celebrate the holidays with. And of course I have a few friends who also host holiday parties and it's something that I always look forward to since we rarely see each other even if we live in the same state.

I've actually planned on giving my Filipina friends some save the date magnets for Christmas. I'm sure they'll find them useful considering how busy they are and it can be difficult remembering all the important dates. I'm also getting some for myself because I just have too many dates to remember.

These magnets are actually nice gift ideas. Have you heard of 123print.com? I checked their website and they have a variety of magnets like calendar magnets, car magnets, photo magnets, regular magnets and of course the save the date magnets. If you're interested check their website for more information.

So now that I already know what to give my friends for Christmas, I have to start saving money for it. It's a good thing that the prices of the magnets are very affordable. I'm sure my friends will appreciate my gifts and they won't mind how much I paid for them.

Researchers: Giant rift in Ethiopian desert will create a new ocean

(Picture: University of Rochester)
A very interesting news caught my attention this morning. It's about the 35-mile-long rift that broke open the desert ground in Ethiopia. This actually happened in 2005 and some geologists believed the rift was the beginning of a new ocean, but the claim was controversial the report said.

Now, scientists from several countries found similiarities in the volcanic processes beneath the Ethiopian rift and those at the bottom of the world's oceans which made them believe that a new ocean is in the making. This study is published in the latest issue of Geophysical Research Letters. Researchers say that Ethiopia will become an ocean-ridge laboratory for them if it will be established that what is happening in Ethiopia is like what is happening at the bottom of the ocean.

The group of researchers is led by Atalay Ayele (professor at the Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia), Ghebrebrhan Ogubazghi (professor at the Eritrea Institute of Technology), and Jamal Sholan (National Yemen Seismological Observatory Center). This group of researchers have installed seismometers and measured 12 similar events since the rift was discovered in 2005.

The 35-mile rift believed to happen in just days is being monitored by Cindy Ebinger, professor of earth and environmental sciences at the University of Rochester, and her colleagues.

I need a new dining table

The dining table we have now is from my husband's parents. As much as I'd like to keep it but it badly needs a replacement. It's already old and the chairs don't look good anymore. The color is fading and the table is already making a funny noise whenever I move it. A new dining table is actually my Christmas wish list. I've searched around for dining tables and I can say right now that I can't afford it. Luckily, a friend told me about a Tulip Table that she bought from modernfurnitureclassics.com and she showed me a picture of it. I was glad to know that it's affordable. So now I have to discuss this plan of mine to my husband and see what he says. He knows that I've been dreaming of a new dining table.

Anyways, it's so funny because before the things on my Christmas list are not really that important. But I guess things have changed. I want things for the house or something very useful and not just ordinary material things to satisfy my own personal needs.

Warming up in front of the fireplace

My friend has one of this Amish fireplaces and she loves it. It was actually a gift to her by her in-laws when she had a house renovation last year. I actually love fireplaces even if I don't have one in our unit. So this is a must when we move to our own place. I think it feels nice to get warmed up in front of the fireplace on a cold day.

My husband likes fireplaces too. He grew up having a fireplace in their house so I think that's how he developed a love for it. His two older brothers have fireplaces in their houses too.

Job hunting is not fun

It will be one year in December since my husband lost his job. There's never a day that he doesn't send out resumes. It's tough out there especially that more and more people lose their jobs everyday. He's probably used all job searches availabe online including a Boston Job Search. Although the commute to Boston is tough but it's where the money is.

We're praying and hoping that one of these days he'll find a job that is right for his skills and expertise. Right now the pay is secondary for us. We just need him to get a job to keep the cash flow going.

I know that there are thousands of people out there who are looking for jobs. Just keep on looking and never lose faith. I know it's tough but we have to remember that we're not alone in this situation.

A future vet

My son loves animals. I wouldn't be surprised if he'll decide to go a veterinary school in college. It's known to him that owning a house is one of our plans and his request was that if we can have a little pond in the backyard. He wants to have some fish and maybe turtles too. Kids are really cute, you know? So my husband said yes as long as he will help us take care of the pond which he said he will.

So since we're considering to have a small pond if and when we get our own place we have scoured the Internet for pond supplies. My husband and I don't know anything about this stuff. But I'm actually excited about this. Thinking about it makes me really want to work harder to make our dream come true.

Convenience at work

Before I got a barscode scanner at work I'd manually enter the bill number in the sytem. We get a good number of mails everyday so it would take me a while to finish my work. I'd also get interrupted by calls from our clients.

The owners of my company finally got each of us at work a barcode scanner. It was really a relief since it makes our work get done quickly compared to the manual procedures. It's also very convenient since it's light and portable to a certain distance.

Now we get to finish processing all the mails that we get everyday. The barcode scanner is such a big help in making us more efficient in our work.

Why you should get a home insurance

It's a constant topic between me and my husband about buying our own house. However we want to be really sure that we can afford it and this includes paying the home insurance, utility bills, taxes and a lot more. We see lots of houses for sale nowadays but we don't want to be emotional buyers.

A home insurance is a must for us because we want our property protected from unforeseen occurences. It will definitely give us peace of mind knowing that no matter what happens we are assured that our property is secured from damages caused by disasters, accidents or other untoward incidents.

It's very convenient nowadays to apply for a home insurance. Most insurance companies allow prospective clients to apply online and over the phone. They also have rates that are suited to the needs of their clients.

We are just waiting for the right time to purchase our own house. We are hoping and praying that it will happen before my son goes to high school.

Nasty acne

Once in a while I get pimples on my face. It's not a pleasant experience and I can just imagine those people who get them all the time. Pimples are considered non-inflammatory but once they become so reddish that you can no longer see the pus underneath the skin then it's a sign that a doctor's trip is needed.

I know some people can't help it and they start popping those pimples which can cause skin infections. It's best not to touch them and let them heal naturally. When they become persistent then something needs to be done. A visit to a dermatologist is always helpful since they know what's best for such skin problems. Different kinds of acne require different kinds acne treatment and using the wrong one will make the situation worse.

Some people love to experiment but most home remedies don't apply to all kinds of acne. It's really best to consult a doctor and get the right acne treatment especially when the acne problem has gone out of control.
